KARACHI: Pakistani tennis player Aisam-ul-Haq Qureshi said the Pakistan Tennis Federation (PTF) should ask the International Tennis Federation (ITF) to give Pakistan a walkover against New Zealand.

“PTF should not yield to the demands of New Zealand to play the Davis Cup tie on their ground when it is scheduled to be played in Pakistan,” Qureshi told reporters in Karachi on his return from a successful Davis Cup first round tie against Hong Kong.

“The PTF must insist that New Zealand play in Pakistan or demand a walkover by the ITF.”

“We have the example of India, who were awarded a walkover against Australia when the latter cancelled their trip. We are also eligible to get a walkover against New Zealand if they decide to abandon their tour of Pakistan,” he stressed.

Pakistan and New Zealand have been drawn to meet in the Asia-Oceania Group II second round in Pakistan from July 9 to 11. However, New Zealand have contacted the ITF to express concerns over the security situation and demanded that the tie be moved to their home grounds or a neutral venue.

Dispelling the controversy regarding a rift between him and the PTF, Qureshi said that by winning matches for Pakistan at the Davis Cup he has proved his loyalty to the country.

“Winning for the country is always a matter of pride for me.”

Qureshi led Pakistan to a 3-1 victory over Hong Kong by winning both his singles matches and was also involved in the doubles win.

“I am looking forward to playing for Pakistan in the future and will try my best to help my country advance further in the tournament,” he said.
